Redeemer’s University Commitment to Aquatic Stewardship and Shared Ecosystem Sustainability
Promoting Sustainable Water and Ecosystem Practices
Redeemer’s University, Ede, through its African Centre of Excellence for Water and Environmental Research (ACEWATER), is deeply committed to advancing sustainable water resource management and protecting aquatic ecosystems. The Centre plays a leading role in addressing national and regional challenges linked to water quality, conservation, and ecosystem protection.
Through multidisciplinary research and capacity-building initiatives, ACEWATER develops innovative approaches for water treatment, sustainable irrigation, and pollution control. The Centre trains researchers and professionals from Nigeria and across Africa in environmentally responsible practices, ensuring that water use remains socially equitable, economically viable, and ecologically sound.
Developing and Supporting Good Aquatic Stewardship Practices
Redeemer’s University promotes aquatic stewardship, the responsible and inclusive management of water systems and freshwater ecosystems. ACEWATER runs educational and outreach programmes on topics such as:
- Water pollution control and prevention, focusing on reducing chemical contamination and plastic waste.
- Integrated water resource management (IWRM) and climate-smart water use, promoting efficient irrigation and sustainable watershed management.
- Community-focused water education, empowering local residents and students with knowledge on hygiene, sanitation, and environmental responsibility.
These programmes are designed to help maintain the integrity of water bodies, prevent degradation, and encourage long-term conservation of aquatic biodiversity.
Collaboration for Shared Aquatic Ecosystems
Redeemer’s University collaborates with national and regional stakeholders, including government ministries, research institutions, and local communities, to address shared water challenges. Through the World Bank–supported ACE Impact initiative, RUN participates in multi-institutional projects focused on improving access to clean water and strengthening resilience against ecosystem degradation.
The university also supports community-based monitoring of water resources in Osun State and surrounding regions, ensuring local engagement in decision-making and stewardship. Workshops and training sessions organized by ACEWATER emphasize responsible water use, pollution reduction, and sustainable ecosystem practices across households, industries, and agricultural sectors.
